NBA mandates carry now, and Jordan Poole was the first victim – SB Nation

The NBA sent teams a memo on Tuesday morning saying it would crack down on “interrupted dribbling” – better known as carrying. The referees for the Golden State Warriors vs. Miami Heat game later in the day were on top. There were at least four carry violations called in the game, including three against young Warriors goaltender Jordan Poole.

Here is a video compilation of Poole getting whistled for a turnover because of the carry.

Referees also called Miami’s Caleb Martin for carrying during the game.

Steve Kerr spoke about the new league point of interest after the game, saying Poole had been stopped so many times because the coach hadn’t checked his emails or seen the memo. Kerr said the entire league was guilty of violations since Allen Iverson convinced referees it was a legal call. The coach admitted Poole carried the ball.

Draymond Green also spoke about the carry rule after the game. “Every guard in the NBA carries a lot. If it’s a point of attention all year round, let’s see it.

Here’s what the NBA transportation rules say:

A dribbling player may not put any part of their hand under the ball and (1) carry it from point to point or (2) pause it and then continue dribbling.

Here’s a great video from Thinking Basketball on how rule changes like carrying helped score points in the NBA. Does the league really want everyone to start dribbling like Bob Cousy again? Probably not.

With most NBA emphasis points, it is applied early and then generally forgotten. There’s a certain type of fan who always wants the ball handlers called in to carry or travel, and now they get their wish. Well, be careful what you wish for. The game is more fun when the ball carriers have more control over the ball.

One thing is certain: Poole is one of the egregious carry culprits in the entire NBA. It will be fun to see how this rule is applied and how players adapt to it throughout the season.
