Ask anyone who’s ever picked up a club, they’ll all say the same thing: golf is a tough game. Whether you’ve just started playing or you’ve been playing it your whole life, there will undoubtedly come a time in any round when frustration will reach breaking point and the game will become totally unsolvable.
The latest example? Jalen Rose, former NBA star.
Participating in the Ally Challenge Celebrity Shootout at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Michigan this weekend, Rose made several attempts to hit the ball to the green on a par three, only to sniff again and again. Undeterred, Rose continued to hack before stopping to get advice from a reliable source: Jack Nicklaus.
“See this thing here?” Nicklaus said grabbing Rose’s club. “That’s how you hit the ball.”
Nicklaus then urged Rose to slow down, helpful advice for any golfer whose swing has gone a little out of whack. Still coachable, Rose made contact on the next attempt, drawing a warm welcome from the cheering crowd.
Was the contact pure? Not exactly, but that’s not the point. Rose was an excellent sportswoman and an enthusiastic participant in a charitable cause, and clearly won the support of everyone in attendance. Plus, he learned a valuable golf lesson in the process, should he decide to pursue his new hobby: when the going gets tough, it’s better to breathe, slow down, and try to have a little fun.
