AKRON, Ohio – A member of the Ohio Navy Hospital Corps is among 13 Americans and dozens of Afghans killed in a suicide bombing Thursday near Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, confirmed on Friday a school district.
The local Edison school district said Max Soviak, a 2017 graduate of Edison High School in Milan, was killed in the attack.
“It is with deep sadness that I share this news,” Superintendent Thomas Roth said in a statement. “Max was a good student who was active in sports and other activities throughout his school career. At Edison High School, Soviak was on the honor roll and played football, the Sandusky Register reported. Before joining the Navy, he worked as a lifeguard and maintenance technician, according to the outlet.
In a statement on Facebook on Friday morning, firefighters in the canton of Berlin wrote: “Berlin Heights lost one of its own on Thursday while serving in Afghanistan. We extend our condolences to the Soviak family. Max will never be forgotten, and we will always remember him as an American hero. “
