Victor Osimhen needed 18 screws inserted into his cheekbone after his eye “popped out” in a collision with Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.
The Napoli striker had to be treated in the 3-2 loss and broke his cheekbone and cavity itself, with six equally vital plaques.
Osimhen will now face a three-month period on the sidelines to aid the recovery process, the force of the impact being comparable to the crushing of his face “in a press”.
Gianpaolo Tartaro, the surgeon who treated the 22-year-old on Tuesday, admitted it was a complicated process to conclude and one that required such significant measures.
“He had a series of fractures, it was like his head had ended up in a press,” Tartaro said. Corriere dello Sport earlier this week.
“The eye has come out of its socket. It is not simple at all, in fact it is very delicate due to the crushing of the socket, due to the curvature of the malar bone [which is] practically destroyed.
“The different fractures, not just the cheekbone, obviously resulted in complications and six plates and 18 screws had to be inserted.”
Although Osimhen may resume operations in 2022, Tartaro has admitted that the forward will likely need to wear a special mask to protect his face upon his return.
“[Surgery] took three hours, we had to cut it in three places on his face, ”he continued.
“We must now look at a special mask for his case. It is not something trivial, there is a nerve in it, it is all very difficult. We will see how his situation evolves.
“Victor has to be very careful because if there is a problem, he has to go back to the operating room,” he concluded.
Luciano Spalletti will likely be devastated by the news, with Napoli leading Serie A on goal difference and Osimhen contributing nine goals in 14 appearances.
