Clark County officials are warning people near the growing Nakia Creek Fire northeast of Camas to evacuate or prepare to leave their homes, and schools in Washougal will close Monday to allow families to get on safe.
About 1,000 homes are being evacuated, including Level 3 (go now) orders on Sunday. That compares to around 100 households under Level 1 (Be Prepared) orders on Tuesday, two days after the fire broke out for unknown reasons.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said the fire now covers 400 acres and is moving “aggressively” west and southwest.
Residents can follow information about the fire on the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency website.
Plumes of smoke billowed over Camas on Sunday, about 9 miles from the center of the fire. The smoke contributed to poor air quality in the Portland area.
Mt. Pleasant School in the Gorge will also close on Monday.
Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that the 1,000 houses under evacuation order include levels 1, 2 and 3.
