As summer turns to fall, take a moment to refresh your beauty regimen and reset your spirit
It’s time to face the fact that summer is almost over and winter is coming. But as the nights roll on, there’s no better time to focus on putting in place positive self-care rituals for the months ahead.
This has been a difficult year and with continued uncertainty on the horizon the road ahead is far from smooth, but as always, I find solace in the transformative power of beauty. I ditched loungewear and the no-makeup approach to working from home for a more polished look, because I finally accepted that this is the new normal for the predictable.
So this week, I’m looking at a few new season updates that will give you some breath-taking, from high-impact mascaras to lipsticks. Enjoy!
Revives the skin
Sleepless nights, multitasking, and staring at screens all day can make skin look tired and ashy. Investing in a new dewy foundation is key. Makeup artist Zoe Taylor who has worked with Rihanna, Victoria Beckham and Kiera Knightley agrees: “Right now there is a massive movement towards adopting makeup once again, freedom of expression and a real moment without borders. ”
Healthy skin is just as important. Whether you are constantly wearing and moving your face mask or working in an air conditioned / heated environment all day, a long-lasting foundation that is lightweight but has coverage to build up is vital. I use the new CHANEL Les Beige Healthy Glow Foundation Moisturizing & Long-lasting, £ 41 and its BIG. I love that it’s modular, so you can get extra coverage where you need it ”.
Fresh skin and foundation are essential for getting back into the saddle from wearing makeup all day. Reach for The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation, £ 16, which is filled with moisturizing skin rose extract and organic fair trade Mexican aloe vera. For stressed skin, Trinny London’s New BFF De-Stress Tinted Serum, £ 39, change the game. She explains; “For years, I’ve been researching how to fight the signs of stress on my skin. The effects make my face tired, lacking in energy and haggard. There was nothing there that really addressed the issue of the level of ingredients needed to target stress, so I started to develop a formula that was potent enough to get the correct results ”.
Its foundation comes in 12 shades suitable for all skin tones. The foundation is packed with plumping hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to help calm the effects of the stress hormone cortisol on the skin.
After 6 months of daily treatment like a Sunday, a full slap may seem like a but a lot. But for a super easy and quick routine, here are a few products to create a flawless look. REN Clean Skincare’s Perfect Canvas Clean Primer, £ 40 is a silicone-free primer, which is great for helping smooth fine lines and pores using agave extract. Once you have prepared your skin you can enter with Clinique’s New Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser, £ 23, to help fade the appearance of dark spots or dark eyes which can be used all over the face without looking mushy. The new formula contains skin-lightening vitamin C and energizing caffeine.
I always blush to wake up my face and get artist Daniel Sandler to agree: “You can always rely on blush to immediately add freshness to a complexion and give dull skin a natural complexion. A soft touch of color on the apples of the cheeks gives you the prettiest bloom. My rule of thumb, when it comes to blush placement, is this: first apply the color to the apple of the cheeks with gentle blending and on the cheekbone towards the ear. This will give you two things, a rosy glow and a more sculpted and lifted cheek ”.
Try Daniel Sandler’s award-winning watercolor liquid cheek color in Divine and Hot Totty, £ 16.50 each, for fresh, streak-free skin, enriched with vitamin E and jojoba for nourished skin.
Eyebrows are also a quick way to structure the face. A thick, defined forehead can give you a refreshed appearance and enhance the eye area. Love the brow queen of LA New Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow pen, £ 23. The eyebrow pen comes in 9 shades and has a shade for blondes to dark browns and granite. The fine tip pen helps mimic bristles for a long-wearing, waterproof formula.
The eyes have it
Celebrity makeup artist and author Lisa Potter Dixon nails it when it comes to eyes: “Face masks are the new normal, so eye shadow is the fastest way to make a statement. Go for pastels, brass, bronzers and glitter pigments, which look great on the skin ”.
I love the color and eye shadows always make me feel really polished and professional. If you just want an easy wash of neutrals Bobbi Brown Real Nudes Eyeshadow Palettes, £ 34, suits all skin tones with bronzes and chocolates, which can be built to create an easy smoky eye or a pure color wash. Don’t be afraid to use the color as a neutral like Avon’s New Lisa Armstrong Dazzle Stick Eye Pencil in Quartz Crystal, £ 10, an amethyst, which is super creamy and melts super quickly and easily with your fingers. For another quick beauty tip, try using The Body Shop Bogota Emerald Eye Color Stick, £ 8, which gives long-lasting intense color and is enriched with babassu oil and fair trade beeswax. I love to use this vibrant color to sweep my entire eyelid or to give the eye a little kitty lick in the corners. I also love the fun colors rich in pigments Huda Beauty’s new Violet, Sable and Khaki palettes, £ 27 each. Each palette has a great blend of shades for all skin tones with shimmering, matte and shiny undertones appearing on the skin.
Finish the eyes with mascara whips. My mantra is ‘go big or come home’ and makeup artist and Instagram star Katie Jane Hughes agrees; “Be bold and nothing else … just a good minimum of 10 layers of something like NARS Climax Extreme Mascara, £ 22. I also like The Body Shop Happy Go Lucky Mascara, £ 12, that really helps define the eyes with its non-flaky formula made from Fair Trade Beeswax from Cameroon and Fair Trade Organic Coconut Oil from Samoa.
There is something delicious about opening a new lip color. It’s both fun and a huge boost in confidence. I love the limited edition MAC Cosmetics lipsticks from makeup artists and sisters Sam and Nicola Chapman. Amplified lipstick in ‘Sam Chapman’s Dream Red’, £ 17.50. This is a bright blue red, which looks great on my darker skin, just like the Cremesheen Lipstick in ‘Nicola Chapman’s Perfect Nude’ € 19.50 which is a creamy peach coral. Nothing beats a bright red for impact and I love Matte Lip Butter from The Body Shop in Manhattan Marigold, £ 7, which contains no carmine, is super light and is enriched with Fairtrade Murala Oil from Namibia.
Lip stains are also a huge trend, especially with all of the masks we wear. The new YSL Beauty Lip Verins Water Stain Glow Lip Gloss £ 30, has a nude shade to suit all skin tones. I love 204 for my dark skin tone, while 203 looks great on lighter skin tones and 213 on olive skin tones. The gloss is super comfortable on the lips and makes your lips look red.
Remember to take care of your lips with Tinker Taylor Beauty Lip Kit, £ 64 which is a lip treatment, a 3 part sequence of lip scrub, lip oil, lip balm to use once a day, then balm or oil throughout the day. It’s vegan and palm oil free for a high quality, long lasting beauty choice.
Refreshing the makeup bag
Love a new spanking makeup bag like I made a new pencil case in school, which always marked a refreshing moment. Use it as a chance for a fresh start and a change in your products. Dubbed the most powerful woman in beauty, Caroline Hirons new The Kit Bag, £ 30, is a must have for makeup fans who, like me, don’t go the extra mile when it comes to beauty. The bag is roomy and wipeable in its signature bright yellow.
I also love the bag from makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, who has worked with everyone from Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kirsten Stewart. the Jillian Dempsey makeup bag, £ 35 is super chic and durable as it is made from sturdy nylon with rose gold zippers and 2 pockets, which will leave you proud when you take it out.
For color therapy, I take the Scamp & Dude Swag Bag Neon Pink Leopard and Lightning Bolt Print, £ 28. The mighty pink just makes me smile. The bag is spacious again and made from 100% cotton. The bag also converts into a pouch or for storing pieces, which is very practical for whatever life throws at you! Enjoy!
