MUSKEGON — The 2022-23 Michigan high school women’s basketball season kicked off last night with most of the region’s teams in action, as they competed for the first time since March.
Below is a snapshot of how each Muskegon area women’s basketball team performed on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.
FRIDAY GAMES

Montague 70, Orchard View 21
The Wildcats attacked the Cardinals early and took a 39-11 halftime advantage before pulling away in the second half for an impressive win in West Michigan Conference action.
Kendall Osborne finished with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Montague (2-0), while Haylee Schwarz added 11 points and six rebounds and Emma Peterson added 10 points.

Reeths-Puffer 46, Spring Lake 36
The Rockets took a 25-12 advantage in the first half, but the Lakers rallied to cut the deficit to just 36-32 with two minutes left in the game. However, Reeths-Puffer was able to freeze the game from the free throw line and earn an impressive non-conference road victory on Friday night.
Senior forward Sophia Hekkema finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead the Rockets (1-1), while Ariel Walker added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Brooklynn Tornes had nine points, four rebounds and four steals.
Alexa Carter led Spring Lake (1-1) with 10 points and six rebounds, while Ellie Wrona and Brooke Bolthouse each added seven points, Tessa Britt had six points and six rebounds, and Ella Andree had four assists.

Ludington 47, Fremont 16
The Orioles took a 15-1 first-quarter lead and continued to edge past the Packers in West Michigan Conference action on Friday night.
Olivia Lynn finished with nine points to lead Ludington (1-1), while Annie Kline added eight points and Elianna Jeruzal seven points.
Jessica Bennett scored seven points to lead Fremont (0-2).

Mason County Central 59, North Muskegon 26
The Chippewas built a 34-16 first-half lead and held off the Norse the rest of the competition for a hard-fought championship win in West Michigan Conference action on Friday night.
Evangeline Hradel led Mason County Central (2-0) with 11 points, while Jessica Petersen, Grace Weinert and Mallory Miller each scored nine points and Wren Nelson had four.
Grace Philpot finished with seven points to lead North Muskegon (0-2), while Emma Buchmiller added six points, Kaylee Martin had five points, five assists and three steals and Francine Vinson had three blocks.

Hart 60, Shelby 16
The Pirates started early by establishing a 27-4 first-quarter lead and went on to edge past the Tigers for a West Michigan Conference win on Friday night.
Addi Hovey scored 18 points and pulled 10 rebounds to lead Hart (2-0), while Abby Hicks added 14 points and six rebounds, Aspen Boutell had nine points, five assists and five steals, and Mariana VanAgtmael had 11 points, six rebounds. , seven assists and five steals.
Kendall Zaverl scored six points to lead Shelby (1-1).

Traverse City Central 31, Grand Haven 30
The Buccaneers held a 20-14 halftime lead but couldn’t muster much offense in the second half, as the Trojans broke into the final two quarters of action to steal a victory over the road off Friday night conference.
Heidi Berkey and Maddie Schopf each scored nine points to lead Grand Haven (0-1).

Kent City 68, Lakeview 17
The Eagles bounced back from their season-opening loss to Lowell in impressive fashion, as they took a 35-15 first-half lead and cruised past Lakeview the rest of the competition for a victory in the CSAA league Friday night.
Lexie Bowers finished with 19 points, seven assists, seven steals and six rebounds to lead Kent City (1-1), while Maddie Geers added 18 points, six rebounds, seven steals and three blocks. Hannah Stellini added eight points and Savannah Miller seven points.
Baylor Syrjala scored six points to lead Lakeview.

Manistee 59, Oakridge 40
The Chippewas took a 30-19 halftime lead and held off the Eagles in the second half to secure a West Michigan Conference win on Friday night.
Libby McCarthy scored a game-high 24 points to lead Manistee (1-1), while Allison Kelley added 12 points, 15 rebounds and six steals and Jayna Edmondson had 12 points.
Anna Lundquist recorded 18 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to beat Oakridge (0-1), while Andrea Romero-Serrano added eight points and seven rebounds and Kaelinn Jozsa had seven points.

Emma Gillard led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Alexis McMahon added nine points and Teghan Sterken had eight points.

Muskegon 66, Central Kalamazoo 62
The Big Reds held a narrow 24-23 halftime lead but couldn’t get away from the Maroons in regulation time as the two teams were deadlocked at 53-53 at the end of the fourth quarter -time. Muskegon pulled out in the extra session, as they beat Kalamazoo Central 13-9 the rest of the way to secure the hard-fought victory in non-conference road action.
Rookie Mariah Sain scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to beat Muskegon (1-0), while Ty’Veonna Davis added 19 points and seven assists, Breanna Gamble-Jones had 10 points and five steals and Aliyah Winston had collected eight points.

Muskegon Catholic Central 42, Hesperia 25
The Crusaders held a slight 19-15 halftime advantage and pulled away from the Panthers in the second half for a non-conference win on Thursday night.
Carrie Ladd finished with 15 points to lead Muskegon Catholic (2-0), while Claire Lavigne added 14 points and Lindsay Ladd and Natalie Rich each had five rebounds.

Newaygo 35, Remus Chippewa Hills 29
The Lions got back on track Thursday night as they used a strong second-half performance to pull away from Chippewa Hills for a CSAA home win Thursday night.
Barbara Toth finished with 18 points, six steals and five rebounds to lead Newaygo (1-1), while Addison Goodin added nine points and three rebounds.
