JAKARTA – Johnny Depp’s story as a musician before becoming widely known as an actor is nothing new. However, a music producer named Tom Zutaut remembers him as a bad guitarist.
Tom Zutau is a well-known recording artist and repertory (A&R) director in the United States. He is known as the person who signed Motley Cr\”ie and Guns NRoses.
In an interview with the recent X5 Podcast, Zutaut revealed that after attending the first audition for a band Depp played in before he became famous in Hollywood, he chose to ignore the actor’s musical talent.
“I don’t think Johnny Depp will be a rock star,” said Tom Zutaut, beginning his story of meeting Depp.
“You know, Johnny Depp auditioned for me twice. It’s a funny story. I went to practice, the manager was my friend and he said, ‘I got this group from my dad. They were awesome.’ I went to meet them and they were really bad. Johnny Depp is the worst guitar player I’ve ever seen, but his charisma is crazy,” Zutaut said.
After that, I met the manager and said, “Look, buddy, he can’t come, but you need to get this kid an agent and get him on TV or in a movie.” This kid is a star, but the songs are bad and his musical skills are bad.
A few months after the meeting, Zutaut said, Johnny Depp also managed to find an acting agent and got a role on the television series 21 Jump Street.
