Morocco shocked the world by finishing top of a group that included Belgium and Croatia, winning two and drawing one of their three group stage matches.
The African side started with a goalless draw against Croatia, then comfortably beat 2018 semi-finalists Belgium 2-0 before securing top spot in Group F with a 2-1 victory on Canada.
It is only the second time Morocco have reached the round of 16 at the World Cup, the previous time dating back to 1986.
Spain got their 2022 tournament off to a perfect start with a crushing 7-0 victory over Costa Rica, before drawing 1-1 with four-time world champions Germany.
A shock 2-1 loss to Japan in the final group game cost the 2010 winners a top spot in the group, but not a place in the knockout stages.
The two countries are separated by just eight miles at their closest point across the Mediterranean Sea, but have met on the football pitch only three times in their history and only once since 1961.
It happened at the last World Cup in Russia in 2018, when a 93rd-minute equalizer from Iago Aspas saved a point for Spain in a 2-2 draw at Kaliningrad.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will face Portugal or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
