Modern Family ends 10 years on ABC as whole Pritchett family bid farewell to series finale

Tears, laughter and many goodbyes marked the finale of the Modern Family series on Wednesday as the family sitcom ended its 10 years and 250 episodes airing on ABC.

Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) got his dream job in Missouri, causing Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and their two children to walk away from the house they just bought.

The three Dunphy siblings eventually flew into the nest, finding their own places and leaving their parents Claire and Phil (Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell) to plan an RV trip across the country.

Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) made a romantic gesture that made him reconnect with his wife Gloria (Sophia Vergara), who had embarked on a promising career.

And in a move that will certainly appeal to longtime fans, Claire and Mitchell recreated their old skating routine and found out what happened to the trophy they won all those years ago.

At the opening of the series finale, Claire and Phil camped in a motorhome in their driveway to escape the madness of their house, which they now shared with three children and a pair of twins.

Their daughter Alex (Ariel Winter) returned after leaving her high-end job “ for something badly paid and ethical, ” Phil noted, while Claire winced.

“Things have become total chaos,” complained Claire, while everyone in the house saw themselves fighting for their lack of space, hot water, cleanliness and calm.

Claire told the children that one of them had to move out and that they had to decide before the end of the day.

None of them wanted to go. Alex pointed out that she had just taken a pay cut, Luke (Nolan Gould) was on leave to spend more time with his family and Haley was struggling with “ two babies and a husband with special needs ”.

Alex was suddenly called into Arven’s office from his new boss, and Haley suggested that he might be romantically interested in her, trying to build a relationship before she started.

In fact, he wanted to tell her that their business was moving to Switzerland, if she wanted to go there.

Before explaining, she stammered that she understood that they could have a romantic relationship, and it turned out that they did, kissing awkwardly and exchanging “sexy” texts.

In his new home, Mitchell is raving about the light, the karaoke room and the pediatrician next door.

He and Cam liked it so much that they named their baby boy “Rexford” after their street.

But as they prepared to host a party, Cam received a call from the athletic director of the University of North Central Missouri, who offered him the job of head coach he had already lost.

Cam said he had no hard feelings about missing the concert, and even sent the man who got the post “a bottle of Scotch congratulations”.

“Well, he drank it,” said the sports director. “Then he did a press conference where he used colorful language to speak to a reporter and blamed certain things on the Jews.”

Cam was offered the job and had to decide if he wanted it that day, but he hid it from Mitchell, only telling it to their friend Ronaldo (Christian Barillas), who revealed it to everybody.

Jay gave the couple a hideous gift for their new home: an “old bartender” model.

“Dad, that’s exactly what we needed, a little fantasy! Exclaimed Mitchell.

Since the character was round like Cam and red-haired like Mitchell, Jay nicknamed him “Kitsch”, combining men’s names – and Mitchell loved it.

“Great, now Mitchell is even happier,” Cam worried. “I’m going to die in this house.”

Mitchell told everyone how happy he was, joking that he only wanted Cam to be able to “ give up hogging the covers ”.

Because I haven’t given up enough for you! Cam let go.

He told Mitchell about this job, which led her husband to say, “This is my chance to be there for you. I don’t care where we live, as long as you’re there by my side.

Their guests passed out and Claire said to Mitchell that her words were beautiful, to which he replied, “Well, everyone was watching me. What was I supposed to say?

Mitchell then accepted the decision, as did his daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), who planned to dye her hair blue and get “a pig of emotional support.”

The couple sang Diana Ross and Lionel Richie’s Endless Love to commemorate the moment, just as their drunk friend Sal (Elizabeth Banks) poked their heads around the corner.

“You cook, don’t you?” she cooed. ‘Cause my gummy’s kickin’ in! ”

At home, Gloria told Jay that she felt like nobody needed her now that she had a new career as a real estate agent.Jay swore that everyone still needed her , telling him not to feel guilty because it was time to shine.

Claire and Phil came home to learn that all their children were moving: Alex, in Switzerland, Haley and Dylan in a new apartment, and Luke at the University of Oregon school.

As the finale entered its second game, Cam and Mitchell said goodbye to their entire family at Dunphy’s home, while Claire mourned the loss of her “ former skating partner ”, her brother.

Jay showed up to tell Cam that he couldn’t miss their departure, adding, “ My two sons are leaving, ” which prompted everyone to join together in a giant group hug.

But a tornado delayed their flight by two hours, giving the family more time.

Gloria and son Joe (Jeremy Maguire) were traveling to Colombia for the summer, Manny (Rico Rodriguez) was pursuing “ adventures ” in the film industry, and Phil planned to attend a tumbling conference called “ Churning Man ”.

By the time Cam and Mitchell left, they heard that there had been flood warnings in Missouri when a flight of locusts had been spotted on the flight path.

“Towards which part of the Old Testament are we going?” Asked Mitchell.

They finally left, then heard the family take a photo and stormed in, only to receive notification by phone that hail has now prevented their theft, and they would not leave until 9:00 p.m.

While they were waiting, Claire told Mitchell that he still had his old skating trophy, and Jay corrected them, saying that their mother had donated them to the rink.

The siblings went to the ice, stole the trophy and recreated their old skating routine at Duran Duran’s Hungan Like the Wolf.

“It’s more sexual than I remember,” grinned Mitchell.

As Alex and Haley packed their bags, they pulled a final prank on Luke, prompting him to recreate his role as “ Woofie ”, a dog he had played when he was six years old.

They watered him, dragged him on a leash and beat him with paper towel rolls, but finally realized how much he would miss them, and each other.

Gloria feared that Jay would lose his hearing or that he would be depressed because he often looked out into space.

Worried, Phil found Jay lying in a bedroom, listening through a headset to a lesson in Spanish which made him ask a waiter for a “spoon”.

-Everything you need, buddy, Phil replied, snuggling it up.

Jay jumped up, surprised, as an embarrassed Phil apologized and started to leave.

He told Phil that he had learned Spanish for Gloria, and forgave her, noting, “Today can’t be easy for you either.” Maybe you start to think about what you want your next chapter to be.

Cam confronted Gloria in the kitchen with a note of goodbye that he hoped to make her cry, but instead, she thought about how much she would miss Manny.

She gave her son a farewell note while he was taking a bath, then handcuffed him to his tap.

Phil found Claire standing in an empty room, remembering their first days as the children came in and out.

“It’s been about 25 years of uninterrupted madness, then when it ends, it ends,” she observed.

“Until our next chapter,” suggested Phil, offering an RV trip across the United States to take “selfies with all the great baseball mascots.”

Claire cried when she left the room, saying, “They’re really leaving. What are we doing?’

“What people have always done,” replied Phil. “Leave the porch light on. They come back.’

Luke and Manny said goodbye, with Luke asking, “How come you never wrote a poem for me?”

“They were all for you!” Manny insisted, hugging him.

Gloria confronted Jay, wondering what was wrong with him, and he replied in Spanish. She was delighted to discover that he had learned Spanish to go to Colombia with her that summer.

“You have been watching my family for 12 years,” said Jay. “The least I can do is watch yours for a summer.

The family gathered for a last photo, which made everyone cry.

‘Why is it so difficult?’ Gloria asked. “We have already done this seven times today.”

“It’s difficult because not everyone has what we have,” said Jay.

“Mitchell, I put the skating trophy in your suitcase,” said Claire to her brother. “I want you to have it first, so I know you will come back.”

Phil cried, saying, “I’m going to lead by example and be the first to let go.

Second, he threw his arms around his family again, admitting, “It was horrible.

At the end of the show, Cam, Mitchell and the kids were on the plane, Haley and Dylan moved into the couple’s old house, Phil and Claire wrote their RV plans on the calendar, and Jay and Gloria attended Joe’s soccer game.

“Life is full of changes, some big, some small,” said Jay in a voiceover. “I learned a long time ago that you can fight, or try to make the most of it. And it’s much easier if you have people who help you cope with everything in life. At least that’s what helps me sleep at night.

With that, the three families turned off the lights on their house, although Phil and Claire turned on their flashlights again.

Social media went wild at the end of the show with @XTineBigHouse writing that she was “ sobbing ” while thanking the show, “ for so many years of laughing ”.

Others have said, “Which part of the Old Testament are we going to?” These lines are killing me! “said @kikabelle, referring to one of Mitch’s aftershocks about the move to Missouri.

Another fan, @anwarr__s added, “I love the way Haley and Dylan moved into Cam and Mitch’s house.

‘@ RDin1114 reacted to a particular line, which seemed to be a subtle blow to President Trump -‘ I shouldn’t be penalized for being smart. I’m not running for president.

Towards the end of the episode, one of the most poignant moments was when Luke asked Manny why he had never written a poem for him, and Manny revealed that they were “all for him.”

The same user also reacted to another touching moment, when hardened Jay (Ed O’Neill) said he said his two sons were leaving, referring to both Cam and Mitch.

Others like @realAdamStrang praised Modern Family, ‘this shows that my whole family is going to sit and watch together.

@ CassyRodgers20 said it was one of the “ best series finals ”, adding that the cast and crew “ did it right ”.

Despite the end of the show, which is a huge success, there is already talk of a spin-off within the creative team of the show.

Co-creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd weighed in on the subject in an interview with Deadline published the same evening.

Although the two executive producers were not ready to go ahead with a spin-off, they believed that the couple of Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet seemed most likely to work alone.

The two were asked about Mitchell (Ferguson) and Cameron (Stonestreet) moving to Missouri at the end of the series, and if that gave them the opportunity for their own show.

Lloyd semblait également être fan d’une éventuelle série Mitchell et Cameron, et il a expliqué le choix de faire déménager le couple marié au Missouri à la fin de l’émission.

“ Nous voulions les faire partir pour un nouveau voyage, et il semblait symétrique que Mitchell suive Cam quelque part et peut-être autour de la famille de Cam parce que Cam avait joué ce rôle dans la vie de Mitchell au cours des 11 dernières années.

“ Cam a eu l’occasion de faire quelque chose de merveilleux et d’excitant, Mitchell s’est senti bien, ce qui m’oblige à le laisser poursuivre son rêve, et je vais aller avec lui et voir à quoi ressemble cette vie pour moi ”, a-t-il déclaré.

Bien qu’il soit satisfait de l’idée d’un spin-off de Mitchell et Cameron, Lloyd était aussi prudent que son partenaire.

«Cela arrivera-t-il? Je ne suis pas sûr mais nous serions probablement stupides de ne pas l’explorer. Cependant, faire un spin-off est lourd à bien des égards et nous ne le ferons pas à moins que nous ne soyons confiants qu’il y a quelque chose là-bas, je ne veux pas dire que c’est un plan à long terme, c’est en discussion mais nous verrons. Nous ne voulons pas sauter dans quelque chose comme ça, en particulier parce que Modern Family est un acte difficile à suivre, mais c’est une possibilité », a-t-il déclaré.

L’émission a débuté modestement en 2009, et a continué à réinventer pratiquement la sitcom familiale à partir de zéro, remportant plus de 20 Emmy Awards Primetime et un Golden Globe en cours de route.

Le dernier jour de tournage de Modern Family a eu lieu en février, et les membres de la distribution se sont rendus sur Instagram à l’époque pour partager des images étonnantes marquant la dernière fois que les Dunphys, Tucker-Pritchetts et Pritchett-Delgados se sont réunis devant la caméra.

Les images des décors vides, des ajustements finaux et des moments de retour au scénario pilote de la série ont tous souligné le sentiment aigre-doux que le casting et l’équipe semblaient partager alors qu’ils mettaient un terme à l’ère de la famille moderne dans leur carrière.
