Mohamed Salah made UEFA Champions League history with a record-breaking hat-trick in Liverpool FC’s 7-1 loss to Glasgow Rangers. He scored his three goals in six minutes and 12 seconds.

Salah was dropped from the starting line-up but was later sent on as a substitute by Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in the 67th minute of the group stage game.

Before Salah’s three goals were two from his Brazilian teammate, forward Roberto Firmino, who said UEFA that he saw Salah’s trio of goals coming.

“Incredible,” Firmino said. “When he scored the first goal, I told Darwin on the bench ‘he’s going to score a hat-trick, 100 per cent’. I could feel him on the bench, and that’s exactly what he did, and I’m so happy for him.

Jürgen Klopp also hailed Salah’s remarkable victory saying: “Mo Salah? Special. Very important, everything was. I can’t think of a player who didn’t play well. It’s an anomalous result and we’re not doing more than we should, but it’s the best we could have asked for.

Liverpool’s spectacular performance against Rangers puts them second in their group, behind Napoli, who are unbeaten in the tournament so far. A final group stage game against Ajax Amsterdam confirms Liverpool’s place in the knockout stage.

Fans are hoping the record treble is a sign that Salah, who has faced a goal-scoring drought this season – with two goals in the English Premier League and five in the Champions League – is back in form, especially with the club’s impending clash against table players Manchester City on Sunday, October 16.

Salah is no stranger to comebacks or records. In this case, the previous fastest hat-trick record holder was Bafetimbi Gomis for Lyon, who struck three times in seven minutes to defeat Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.
