MLB The Show 21 was released simultaneously on the PlayStation and Xbox platforms and a quarterly report from Sony shows that it made huge profits.
When MLB The Show 21 came out, it also joined the Xbox Game Pass lineup, but that didn’t hurt its sales. According to a recent report from Sony, MLB The Show 21 on Xbox is a big part of its success.
MLB The Show 21 exceeded Sony Interactive Entertainment’s expectations, resulting in increased quarterly profits. Spotted on Twitter recently by industry analysts Mat Piscatella and Daniel Ahmad, the quarterly earnings report is making its rounds online. The company specifically credits the game’s launch on platforms outside of the PlayStation ecosystem such as Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S.
According to Sony’s recent quarterly report, MLB The Show 21 has seen strong additional sales as well as commercial success. Report credits Days Gone, MLB The Show 21, and Horizon Zero Dawn launch on platforms other than PlayStation as a major factor in Sony’s quarterly success. The quarterly report also attributes the additional sales for improved profits.
Sony expected a quarterly decline in proprietary software sales due to The Last of Us Part 2 released in the same quarter of last year. Although the company expects a decline, sales of MLB The Show 21 and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart exceeded his expectations. It is likely that MLB The Show 21 fans on Xbox platforms also helped add-on sales, further boosting Sony’s quarterly revenue.
Although Sony’s recent quarterly earnings report credits sales on other platforms with an increase in profits, the report shows some declines on the PlayStation side. Software and network services revenue on the platform was down 15% compared to the same period last year. Total playing time has also decreased by 32% compared to last year, but it is still 18% higher than the same period in 2019.
MLB The Show 21 launched on Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S alongside PS4 and PS5, which has likely helped the game’s sales stay high. The inclusion of the game in the Xbox Game Pass lineup made several PlayStation fans believe that Xbox sales would be affected, but that is not the case according to this quarterly report.
PlayStation has already mentioned that more games are coming to other platforms and this increase in quarterly profits gives fans an idea of why. This commercial success on other platforms will likely consolidate the expansion of PlayStation on PC and Xbox. Some fans on Twitter are still hoping for a MLB The Show 21 release on Nintendo Switch, but others are hoping for more titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S.
MLB The Show 21 is available now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S.
