The undefeated Missouri Tigers (5-0), who are averaging 91.8 points per game, host the nation’s No. 6 offense, also known as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-1), at Columbia tonight.
Coastal Carolina, a program that was selected to finish No. 8 in the Sun Belt Conference, will make its third trip to Mizzou in the second half of a two-game road trip for the veteran Chanticleers. Their opener featured a heartbreaking 79-78 loss to USC Upstate, who made the winning layup with 10 seconds left.
The Tigers, meanwhile, welcome the sixth different team to Mizzou Arena in their early-season homestand. Mizzou beat Mississippi Valley State 83-62 in its previous game, and the Tigers are in the middle of a three-game winning streak by more than 20 points.
This game will be between KenPom’s No. 52 and No. 188 teams, suggesting a possible blowout. The Chanticleers, however, are no strangers to pulling off an upset early in the season. Last season, in a similar spot, Costal Carolina outscored South Carolina in an 80-56 win. Tonight, they hope to do the same against another SEC challenger.

Meet the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
What happens when you pair the nation’s No. 6 scoring offense with the nation’s fourth-best rebounding team?
Coastal Carolina.
The Chanticleers are one of three programs to place in the top six in both categories, making them an opponent unlike any Mizzou has faced thus far.
At center of their success is Essam Mostafa, who is averaging 16.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. The junior lives at the post, using his 6-foot-9 frame to corral rebounds and light up points in the paint category on the box score.
Joining Mostafa is Coastal Carolina leading scorer Jomaru Brown. A super senior Eastern Kentucky transfer guard, Brown, is averaging 21.7 points per game off the bench. His strong start from the field (58.3%) and three-point range (61.5%) make him a deadly threat from anywhere on the field.
Behind these two forces, the Chanticleers offer two more double-digit scorers in Josh Uduje and Linton Brown, as well as another strong rebounder in Will Likayi. The former duo combined for 29.0 points per game, while Likayi added 8.3 rebounds per game.
Head coach Cliff Ellis leads the veteran-run Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, which has just one freshman and two sophomores. For the past 48 seasons, Ellis has coached college basketball and this year is entering his 16th season at Coastal Carolina. The seasoned veteran coach has 819 wins, which is third among active coaches and 10th among all NCAA Division I basketball coaches.
Behind Ellis and a six-day break since his last game, Coastal Carolina will pose a serious threat. Experience, a high-powered attack and a strength that builds on one of Mizzou’s main weaknesses (rebounding) will test the Tigers in ways unknown later in the evening.
3 game keys
- Attack the three-point line early and effectively
Coastal Carolina holds opponents just 27.1 percent from beyond the arc, but in its lone loss, USC Upstate shot 50 percent from long range. If Mizzou is to expose the Chanticleers defense and continue his blistering pace, a first key will be knocking those points down.
The Tigers have the ability to score from this range, thanks to D’Moi Hodge and Nick Honor, so those two will need to step up in a big way. An early frenzy from three-point field will not only allow Mizzou to set his own tempo, but will force Coastal Carolina to catch up.
- Make the battle of the boards competitive
Bounces, bounces and more bounces.
That’s the recipe for Coastal Carolina, which has a +19 rebound margin. The Tigers, meanwhile, are posting a -0.6 rebound margin, highlighting an obvious weakness for a team that hasn’t displayed much power out of the glass.
This game could easily get ugly for Mizzou on the boards, so making it competitive will be a big factor in determining who gets the win. The Tigers lost the rebound battle to MSVU last time out, and they’ll need a better showing this time around.
Expect Mizzou to use either Mohamed Diarra, Mabor Majak – or both – earlier in the game, but also look for Aidan Shaw and Kobe Brown to step up in the rebounding department. If the Tigers can’t get within 10 rebounds of the Chanticleers, watch out, Mizzou fans…
- Continue to control the turnover margin
One of Mizzou’s biggest bright spots in this young season is his ability to force opponent turnovers and limit his own turnovers, helping the Tigers climb to 21st in assist/deal rates. turnaround of the country.
Defensive pressure will be crucial against Coastal Carolina’s high-scoring offense, so forcing mistakes and capitalizing on those missed opportunities could turn the tide of the game. Once again, Hodge and Honor will be the main leaders in this category, so they will need to continue their early season success to avoid an upset.
game prediction
Prediction KenPom: Mizzou 84 | Coastal Carolina 69
My prediction: Mizzou 98 | Coastal Carolina 86
It’ll be fun.
On this Thanksgiving eve, Mizzou and Coastal Carolina will bring all the intensity of a family reunion as well as a supercharged evening. while eating pointing contest. The points will arrive as quickly as potato balls and stuffing on plates nationwide, so good luck to those who bet higher.
In the end, however, it will be the Tigers’ defense that will seal the victory. Hodge and Honor will add another solid defensive performance, using that pressure to again capitalize on fast-breaking opportunities. I think it’s going to take a big push from Kobe Brown too, especially on the boards, and Mizzou will give you something else you’ll be grateful for on Thursday when the Tigers feast 6-0.
