Patrick Payton tells NewsWest 9 that advocating for the importance of the oil and gas industry is a conversation he plans to have in Washington DC
MIDLAND, Texas – The State of Midland 2021 was at the Bush Convention Center on Monday.
Leaders from cities, counties and the private sector came together to talk about everything from improving Midlander’s health to updating infrastructure amid a population boom and the continuation of the pandemic.
Another big topic of conversation?
Advocate for the importance of the oil and gas industry, not only in the basin, but across the country.
Midland Mayor Patrick Payton told NewsWest 9 it was a conversation he plans to have in Washington DC
“We called various mayors across the country and worked with Senator Cruz, Congressman Cornyn, August Pfufler and the Petroleum Strategic Partnership to build a coalition of mayors who can then come to Washington DC with us and advocate for this. that it really means to be a nation of energy, ”Payton said. “Not just oil and gas, but hydropower, nuclear, whatever because we are truly the nation and the world leader in energy. So we want to talk about it with a wise voice, not a radical voice. “
This idea of a coalition of mayors arose after Payton went to a national conference of mayors. It was then that he realized that there are not enough people who know how vital the vital energy is to the nation.
“The Covenant of Mayors is made up of Democratic city mayors, people who really want to spend their time demonizing the oil and gas industry,” Payton said. “So it’s up to us to step in to tell the story of the energy, oil and gas industry rather than letting the story be dictated to the public.”
And by us, Payton refers to the mayors of South and North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The coalition has one big goal in mind:
“It’s about bringing the facts to Washington DC, rather than a radical program with loud voices… we just want to be a calm voice,” Payton said.
Mayor Payton tells us that he has already met with oil and gas executives from other parts of the country. They will continue to meet and gather information. Arriving in late summer or early fall, the mayor will travel to Washington to have a conversation with the leaders there.
