Microsoft is updating the icons for its operating system, marking the end of the old Windows 95 icons that were a staple of the operating system.
The new interface, dubbed “Sun Valley”, was spotted by Windows Latest. Classic icons, including the hibernation monitor and floppy disk, have been revised – the former shifting from a CRT display to a more modern display, and the latter more sleek (as far as a floppy disk can be) .
These are all set to match the style of the Drive and Trash desktop icons revealed in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21343.
“Several changes, such as the orientation of the folder icons and the default file type icons, were made for greater consistency between Microsoft products that display files,” Microsoft said at the time.
“Notably, top-level user folders like Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and Pictures have a new design that should make them stand out a bit easier at a glance.”
The Windows Security icon, Narrator icon, and Notepad icon have also been updated, and we’ve seen previews for other apps including Calculator, Groove Music, Mail, Voice Recorder , Alarms & Clock, Movies & TV & Calendar.
It’s all part of a larger trend to modernize the Windows experience, both in terms of the operating system and Microsoft’s iconic Office products.
As revealed at its Build 2020 conference, Windows 10 will soon feature a Spotlight-like search bar on Apple computers and a “Fluid Office” update that makes Word, PowerPoint, and Excel more similar to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
With build 2021 starting later this month, it is expected that further Windows developments will follow.
