Which Windows tablet is the best?
There aren’t many tablets that can run Windows reliably. Unsurprisingly, two of the few vouchers are designed and produced by Microsoft itself. The Microsoft Surface Pro is widely considered the most capable Windows tablet, and the Surface Go is almost certainly the most portable Windows PC around. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, and which one is right for you depends on what you plan to do with it.
Microsoft Surface Pro 8
Now in its 8th generation, Microsoft Surface Pro packs a selection of powerful yet efficient hardware into a sleek, durable, and finely crafted package. Released in October 2021, it sports an 11th Gen Intel Core processor with two or four cores. You can choose from multiple RAM and storage combinations, with up to 32 gigabytes of system memory offered with up to a 1-terabyte solid-state drive.
Besides the availability of high-end hardware, the Surface Pro 8’s display really shines. Its 13-inch screen boasts an impressive 2880 by 1920 resolution, ensuring razor-sharp image quality and consistent upscaling. The touchscreen is basically unmatched when it comes to Windows laptops as well.
Ultimately, both surface sizes are technically tablets. Make no mistake, though, they’re equipped with the same high-quality hardware found in many full-size laptops. A few Surface Pro configurations even meet the requirements for Intel Evo certification, which promises convenience, long battery life, and high-bandwidth connectivity in addition to other great features.
Take note, however, of the interesting but barely useful Surface Pro X. It uses an entirely different type of processor than the x86 processors that most Windows PCs rely on. The ARM chipset inside the Surface Pro X is essentially the same as a smartphone. In other words, it is very efficient but not very powerful. Since the ARM architecture is so radically different, Microsoft had to redesign Windows itself to run smoothly on hardware.
Windows on ARM processors is still mostly experimental, with little processing power and few useful programs available on the platform. You should avoid the Surface Pro X and all Windows ARM tablets until the technology advances.
Advantages of Microsoft Surface Pro
- Impressive performance: No other laptop or tablet packs so much firepower into such a small package.
- Premium screen: Surface Pro 8 has one of the highest resolutions and most accurate color profiles you could want. It is even ideal for photo and video editing.
- Premium fit and finish: Performance aside, the Surface Pro sports a truly professional appearance. Its clean lines and premium materials look great, and it’s as durable as a business tablet can be.
Disadvantages of Microsoft Surface Pro
- High prices: The most useful setups will cost you quite a bit of money.
- Poor thermal management: It tends to heat up quickly and the CPU throttles if it exceeds the preset temperature.
- Lower battery life: There just isn’t much room to fit a large battery inside the Surface Pro.

Microsoft Surface Go
Although it looks almost exactly like a miniature version of the Surface Pro, the Surface Go is a very different beast on a very different mission. Instead of the powerful processor and large amounts of storage offered by the Pro, the Go packs a relatively paltry dual-core Intel i3 processor and up to just 8GB of RAM.
Although nowhere near as fast as the Pro, it wasn’t meant to be and shouldn’t be such powerful gear. Instead, it’s been designed to deliver a truly portable Windows experience, and it does a great job of that.
It comes with Windows 11 in S mode, which limits some important options like installing software. Since S mode limits you to pre-approved programs found in the Microsoft Store, it’s more streamlined and secure than the fully extended version of Windows 11 Home. The lightweight S Mode also somewhat compensates for the Surface Go’s hardware shortcomings.
Benefits of Microsoft Surface Go
- Relatively affordable: That’s actually a lot, considering its versatility.
- Very wearable: There are no other Windows tablets of this size that can perform so well.
- Optional LTE version: Robust 4G connectivity keeps the specialized LTE model connected wherever you have cellular service.
Disadvantages of Microsoft Surface Go
- Average performance: Occasionally, you will experience slowdowns or long wait times, even when using Windows in S mode.
