Microsoft releases emergency fix after breaking OneDrive with Windows 10 update – BetaNews

Windows 10 users who installed Patch Tuesday updates this month reported that OneDrive and OneDrive for Business were down.

The issue affects update KB5018410 and others released after it. Those affected by the issue report app crashes, inability to sign out of OneDrive, sync issues, and various other symptoms. Microsoft recognized the problem fairly quickly and has now released an emergency fix (the KB5020953 update).

Describing the issues caused by update KB5018410, Microsoft states: “The Microsoft OneDrive app may quit unexpectedly. You may not be able to sign out or unlink your OneDrive account and sites or folders from Microsoft Teams and SharePoint”.

Expanding on this in an entry on the Windows Build Health page, the company states:

After installing KB5018410 or later updates, OneDrive may quit unexpectedly and you may receive an error when trying to perform the following actions:

– Sign out or unlink your account in the Microsoft OneDrive sync app.

– Unlink sites or folders from syncing with your device from Microsoft SharePoint or Microsoft Teams sites.

– Uninstallation of OneDrive sync app may fail.

To note: These issues can affect both OneDrive and OneDrive for Business.

Now, Microsoft has released out-of-band update KB5020953 with the following description:

It fixes an issue that prevents Microsoft OneDrive from working. This happens after you unpair your device, stop syncing, or sign out of your account.

For now, the KB5020953 update is only available for download through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
