The Xbox FTC leak revealed redacted documents that suggest Phil Spencer felt pretty good about the Xbox Series X’s chances against the PS5.
Yesterday, court documents revealed what Microsoft executives thought about the PS5 after its reveal in 2020. Today, more information was released about Phil Spencer’s reaction, as detailed in an email to the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood. Spencer begins by discussing the Xbox One’s “price, performance (and messaging) disadvantage” compared to the PS4 – Microsoft has previously admitted to having “lost the console wars” thanks to the poor performance of recent generations.
However, following Sony’s reveal, Spencer said he was “proud of our team.” We have a better product than Sony, not only on the hardware, but just as importantly on the software platform and services on top of the hardware. the ingredients of a winning plan.
Spencer admits that the PS5 reveal was just the start of the next generation and that “we didn’t gain anything.” He does, however, reiterate that “it was a good day for Xbox” – somewhat ironically, given that one would imagine Sony would be feeling pretty good after announcing the capabilities of its new console.
Last night’s leak revealed several of the plans Xbox hopes will likely give it a leg up on PlayStation for the rest of this generation. This includes a new Xbox Series Elsewhere, there’s talk of Xbox’s desire to acquire massive companies like Nintendo and Valve, although Spencer himself admits that might be a bit of a pipe dream.
