Do you remember 2021? Microsoft does this and released a new Windows Insider Channel Release Preview build for Windows 10 21H2, with some useful fixes, including one where Edge will stop responding when Internet Explorer mode is enabled.
The company has yet to set a date for Windows 10 22H2 and has instead continued to deliver updates for 21H2. This one (build 19044.1947 or KB5016688) contains a series of fixes as well as some new features.
Granted, Microsoft’s update track record has been a little spotty lately and we can only hope things go better this time around as it comes with some handy fixes.
The update is “unsecured”, according to Microsoft, but features a useful update for users looking to secure their PCs – an enhancement for Microsoft Defender for Endpoints to detect and stop ransomware and other attacks. Language scenarios can also be managed on multiple terminal managers.
Otherwise, the update contains a lot of handy fixes, including one where its Edge browser will stop responding when Internet Explorer mode is enabled (also preventing interaction with dialogs).
An issue that “degrades BitLocker performance” has been fixed, as has a slightly embarrassing error related to the Take a Test app, which caused all policies related to applying the lock to be removed when the app is closed.
The Take a Test app, according to Microsoft, “creates the right environment for taking a test.” Only the test is displayed, the clipboard is cleared, other applications are not accessible, that sort of thing. Even Cortana is disabled (although if one never uses the assistant, would one even notice?), so a potential lifting of policies when the app is closed could be a little inconvenient.
Other fixes include handling of race conditions (including one that could cause cldflt.sys
to reference invalid memory) and licensing and subscription issues. There is also a fix for an issue that could prevent Microsoft Office App-V virtualized applications from opening or working.
According to figures from AdDuplex, Windows 10 21H2 continues to take the lion’s share of the modern PC market. So it’s encouraging to see Microsoft continue to improve the platform, even with its successor waiting in the wings. ®
