Microsoft rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.3500 to the beta channel late last week. The release has several new features. It includes a new account manager in the Start menu and support for Gmail through Windows Share.

Some Windows 11 Insiders may see a Game Pass ad

However, in addition to focusing on improving its AI capabilities aimed at improving user experience, the company is also introducing advertisements into Windows. The latest build for Windows Insiders features a new Game Pass ad in the Settings app. “We’re introducing a new Game Pass recommendation card to the Settings home page,” Microsoft said.

Notably, this new Game Pass ad will not bother all users. The recommendation card on the Settings home page displays for users who actively play games on their PC. “As a reminder, the Settings home page will only appear on Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 and if you are signed in to Windows with your Microsoft account,” the company added. So, none except Windows 11 Home and Pro users will have to see the Game Pass ad.

Microsoft has already added “recommendations” to Windows 11. In addition to placing a Game Pass ad in the Settings app on Windows, the company is reportedly trying to add some in the “recommended” section of the Start menu. However, it is important to mention that the latest addition does not seem intrusive. As TechRadar noted, “Microsoft is really trying to blur the line between what is an advertisement and what it claims are just friendly recommendations.” »

An announcement or just another useful recommendation?

Many people also seem to be on board with the ads, as the company promotes its products and services, such as Game Pass, to people who might benefit from an improved user experience. Notably, there are also users who don’t seem to like the idea even though they themselves come from Microsoft and are not intrusive.

Not to mention, they won’t be happy with third-party service recommendations in Windows. It’s as if the user interface is the digital space for users to work or play. Adding ads or recommendations to the space can make it look like a billboard where the recommended products or services have nothing to do with the core user experience.

Still, we’ll have to see how many ads or recommendations Windows receives in the future and, more importantly, how user-friendly they remain.
