Microsoft apparently blocks Windows 11 22H2 upgrades on dynamic disks with error 0x8007001 – Neowin

Microsoft released its Windows 11 2022 feature update last month. The update is gradually rolling out to users with compatible computers. System requirements haven’t changed since the original 21H2 release last year, which means you should get the update in case you already have a supported PC. And while this is the case, it seems that Microsoft has blocked the update on systems with dynamic disk.

The report comes from German outlet Deskmodder, where one of its forum members noticed the problem when trying to in-place upgrade to Windows 11 version 22H2 on a disk configured as dynamic. This was not a problem on the original 21H2 version. When trying to attempt the upgrade, the error message “0x8007001” appears, which usually occurs due to disk-related issues. The user tried swapping the install.wim files from the 22H2 setup with the 21H2 ones and the upgrade process apparently worked fine.

Dynamic disks offer more features than basic disks, such as the ability to create volumes across multiple disks (striped and striped), running RAID 5, among others, although they also have their limitations. However, Microsoft generally no longer recommends dynamic disks. Instead, the company recommends using its Storage Spaces and hardware RAID controllers for the functions historically provided by a dynamic disk configuration. This may explain why 22H2 installs fail on such a disk. Microsoft says:

Dynamic disks are obsolete from Windows and we no longer recommend using them. Instead, we recommend that you use basic disks or use the new Storage Spaces technology when you want to group disks into larger volumes. If you want to mirror the volume Windows boots from, you can use a hardware RAID controller, such as the one included on many motherboards.

If you are wondering whether you have a basic disk or a dynamic disk, you can check it by doing the following:

  1. Go to “Disk Management“by right-clicking the Start button or running”devmgmt.msc” in the Win + R dialog box (Run).
  2. Right click on the boot drive (C:) or any other drive, and go to “Properties
  3. Go to “Material” tab in the Properties dialog box
  4. Select the boot drive model in the “All Disk Drives” window
  5. A properties dialog for this player template opens
  6. Go to “volumes” tab and click the “Populate” option.

This will reveal if your disc type is “Basic” or “Dynamic”. It also shows the partition style, i.e. GPT or MBR.
