The visual effects of the user interface (UI) of Windows 11 and its various applications are provided by three materials, namely acrylic, mica and smoke. Microsoft recently added another material called “Mica Alt”, which was spotted by Twitter user and leakster FireCube.
As noted by FireCube, the new Mica Alt material is generally intended to be used for Tabbed instances and Microsoft’s guidance document also confirms this. Microsoft discusses this in their App Layering section of the guide:
Application Layering with Mica Alt
Mica Alt is an alternative to Mica as a base layer in your app hierarchy with the same features like idle and active states and subtle customization. We encourage you to apply Mica Alt as your application’s base layer when you need contrast between title bar elements and your application’s control areas (eg navigation, menus).
A common scenario for using Mica Alt is when building an app with a tabbed title bar.
In terms of requirements, Microsoft says the new Mica Alt material can be used “in applications that use Windows App SDK 1.1 or higher.”
