Michael Beale at Rangers confirmed and hailed as ‘one of the most sought after matches in British football’ as QPR ‘hugely disappointed’

Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Michael Beale as their new manager.

Beale, who was previously Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Ibrox, returns to Glasgow after leaving his role as QPR boss.

After confirming Beale’s appointment on a contract until the summer of 2026, Rangers declared him “without doubt one of the most sought-after young managers in British football”.

“This is an exciting appointment for the club, with Beale undoubtedly being one of the most sought-after young managers in British football,” Rangers said in a statement.

“Indeed, during his previous stint at Rangers, he tirelessly supported manager Steven Gerrard and the technical staff in their efforts to win the number 55 title in 2021, while the club, under Gerrard, was revived on the European scene and built a superb reputation once there.

“Beale has strong and existing relationships with many first-team members and, of course, fully understands the unique nature of Rangers Football Club and the demands and standards that come with representing the club.”

There has been some controversy surrounding Beale’s departure, with the 42-year-old rejecting an offer from Wolves in October, citing ‘loyalty and integrity’ as reasons to stay with QPR, who he joined in the summer . However, a few weeks later, he took over the job from Rangers.

“Our extensive research when looking for a new head coach highlighted him as being very aligned with the direction we are heading in as a football club.

“The start to the season we’ve made, coupled with some very attractive football, has given us reason to be optimistic as we look to build on the previous three seasons.

“That optimism remains, but there’s no doubt that it’s a blow to lose Mick so early in his tenure.”

QPR CEO Lee Hoos said: “The search for Mick’s replacement does not start now – as a club we are always updating a shortlist of potential candidates so that we are ready for a situation like this- here, and we’ll move quickly to make an appointment.

“Mick has helped us take the club forward – and we are grateful for that. The next managerial appointment we make will continue that progression.

“There is so much to play for this season and I fully appreciate the frustrations of the fans at this time. Your support has been incredible and the players need your support now more than ever.

Coaches Neil Banfield, Damian Matthew and Harry Watling have also left QPR to join Beale in Scotland.

Paul Hall, QPR’s B-team manager, will take over first-team duties as the Championship club seek to find a permanent successor to Beale.
