Michael Anthony listened to the Grammy Awards last night (February 5), but he didn’t know what to make of what he was watching.

The former Van Halen bassist shared on Instagram photos he took of his TV during the ceremony. The first two photos were of Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ devil-inspired performance. The other two were of Beyoncé accepting the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album. Anthony’s caption on the post read, “I’m trying to watch the Grammys a bit right now. I don’t know if I’m just a little too old, or a little too buzzed from a few cocktails… What ever happened to rock ‘n’ roll??? Congratulations Beyoncé.”

Later that evening, Anthony shared a screenshot of a track from Ultimate Classic Rock about how Ozzy Osbourne won two Grammy Awards. The delighted Rock & Roll Hall of Famer captioned the photo, “Thank goodness congratulations Ozzy!!!!”

The general categories of the field at the Grammys always seem to generate the most debate. In its history, one of the most debated categories has been Record of the Year.

According to the Recording Academy, the selection criteria for Record of the Year are as follows:

“Recordings submitted for consideration in this category must represent the best overall achievement. Elements to consider are performance, production and engineering; secondary elements to consider are writing/composition, arrangement and the performance of choristers and musicians, if any”

Now, clearly, all of these are subjective, and everyone has different ideas of what constitutes greatness in all of these. However, not all of the choices for Record of the Year have aged well.
