EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Mesker Park Zoo and Botanical Garden wants people to check the label before buying their Valentine’s Day candies.
According to a zoo spokesperson, some well-known sweets contain palm oil, which is a major driver of deforestation in some of the world’s most biodiverse forests. The zoo asks people to avoid palm oil products or, alternatively, to research whether the palm oil comes from sustainable sources.
Zoo officials say there is an app that can help people check the sustainability of palm oil ingredients in the product they buy and the parent company that makes it.
