Hey, what is this? Well, it could be the next Mercedes-AMG C63 in camouflage gear during some test drives. This camouflaged C-Class has very large fender flares that suggest it could be the next AMG C63 hybrid sedan. While driving quietly, this confirms that there is no chance that a V8 built by Mercedes-AMG will be under the hood of this stealthy sports sedan.
If you haven’t heard the rumors surrounding the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63, let me explain it to you. Mercedes-AMG is entering a new hybrid era where it will offer hybrid versions of its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 and 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The big V8 hybrid is reserved for premium Mercedes-AMG products like the Mercedes-AMG GT coupe and sedan. The smaller inline 4 turbocharged hybrid will find its way into mid-range Mercedes-AMG products like the AMG C63, while base AMGs will ignore hybrid components and simply offer an improved inline 4.
This is a massive change from Mercedes-AMG’s past as a V8-centric brand known for building some of the loudest cars on the road. What we lose in the theater we gain in performance and sustainability. Mercedes-AMG has learned a lot from its dominant F1 team and seven manufacturer titles prove they know a thing or two about building a fast hybrid.
This massive change for the AMG C63 is certainly a shock, however, it’s a sign of the times. Sports sedans as we know them will need to evolve to survive and there is simply no easy way to deliver a high-performance V8 without hybrid assistance. Fortunately, emissions regulations have led automakers to make products even faster and we can’t wait to see how fast the new Mercedes-AMG lineup is.
