Mercedes-AMG GT2 Race Car Breaks Cover With 707 Horsepower

Spy photos have revealed that Mercedes is putting the finishing touches on the second-generation GT coupe, but AMG isn’t done with the original model yet. Affalterbach’s most powerful homologated race car, the GT2 is here to complement the GT3 and GT4 models that have been around for years. The new arrival bridges the gap between the two existing track machines and is aimed at “gentlemen drivers”.

The highlight of the AMG GT2 is undoubtedly its powertrain, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft. This tells us that the engine is related to the one installed in the road-going Black Series. In race car spec, it was tuned to deliver a healthy 707 horsepower (520 kilowatts). That’s slightly less than the street-legal supercar with its huge 730bhp (537kW), although dyno tests showed it actually makes over 770bhp.

Ready to take on the next Maserati MC20 GT2, Mercedes-AMG’s latest customer race car pushes 800 Newton meters (590 lb-ft) of torque. The mighty V8 works with a six-speed sequential racing transmission with an adjustable locking differential and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The use of carbon fiber for the driver’s safety cell and 120-litre fuel tank as well as the bonnet and other components has reduced weight to less than 1,400 kilograms (3,086 pounds), with air conditioning included. The AMG GT2 rolls on 18-inch center-lock forged wheels with 325/660 front and 325/705-18 slicks and uses safety technology adapted from the GT3 and GT4.

The newly designed aerodynamic kit includes a rear wing designed from the ground up. It has a gooseneck and can be adjusted according to the circuit. AMG developed the license-free GT coupe with aluminum double-wishbone front and rear suspension, along with anti-roll bars and adjustable shock absorbers.

Before going on sale later in 2023, the race car will undergo testing in the coming weeks. Further evaluations will take place next year during the GT2 European Series season. In addition to participating in races, AMG plans to organize an endurance test.
