The next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class goes on sale next year, which will mean new AMG variants. These spy photos show the E 53 on the road near the Nürburgring.
This E 53 wears a lot of camouflage, but there are a few things worth noting. This one has an egg-crate grille, and the design generally matches how Mercedes hides the Panamericana grille on its in-development AMG products. The sedan rolls on multi-spoke wheels with a black finish. Large brake discs are visible behind them. At the rear, a pair of circular exhausts emerge from cutouts in the bumper.

Although it’s hard to see here, the new AMG 53 models would adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain, much like the recently revealed Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance. Expect the combustion part to be a version of the marque’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. This configuration makes 671 horsepower (500 kilowatts) in the C 63, so the figure is probably a bit lower for the 53.
The C 63 SE Performance uses a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet clutch pack, rather than a torque converter. The setup supposedly offers better response than a normal automatic gearbox, but with improved low-speed refinement over a dual-clutch setup.
We only get a glimpse of the interior of the new E-Class from spy photos. From what little is visible, it resembles what’s inside the latest C-Class by having a slanted tablet-style infotainment screen on the center console.
In May, Mercedes presented the E 63 S Final Edition as a farewell to the existing model. They are exclusively available in matt Graphite Gray Magno on the outside. The 20-inch forged wheels had a glossy black appearance. It came with the AMG Night Package which added black trim to the bodywork.
Inside, the Final Edition came with the premium AMG Performance Seat Package which added Nappa leather in a mix of Titanium Gray Pearl and black upholstery. A plaque on the center console proclaimed the number of this car on production of 999 units.
The Special Edition engine is unchanged. The M177 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 develops 604 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and power is sent to both axles.
