Benjamin Mendy says that winning the Champions League is everyone’s dream in Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s team won a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in February to take control of their last 16 games’ draw.
City have won eight of the last nine national trophies available, but they have not made it past the semi-finals of the highest European competition and have not progressed after the quarter-finals since Guardiola took control there four years.
Mendy says the team is desperate to become European champion but remains cautious before the return match with Madrid, with UEFA hoping to end the competition this season despite the coronavirus crisis.
“We had a good game in Madrid and now we have to play the second leg,” the left-back told club media. “I know that in the minds of all the players they know that just because we won [it] does not mean that it is finished or that we are qualified.
“It’s not every day that you go to a place like the Bernabeu and play like that in the Champions League. We have the opportunity to go far in this cup and we want it, so everyone wakes up, trains, stays focused on the target when they say we can come back.
“We don’t have the Champions League yet, so that’s the dream.”
Mendy is more immediately concerned about the return of the Premier League, which was suspended in March but could resume after June 1.
“I can’t wait,” he said. “We are only waiting for the green light.
“Everywhere, we see that we are going to start on this date and on this date. Now, I am waiting for the guys to send us an SMS to tell us that the league will start at that time, and we will be so happy. “
“But I know they’re going to take every precaution when we get back. It’s not like they’re just going to say” let’s play “; they’re going to check everything, and I think that’s why time.”
Mendy spent time locked out not only trying to keep fit, but also mastering new skills, including cooking and painting.
“Quarantine has not been easy. It is very difficult for everyone,” he said. “I think staying at home, not moving, just going to the store to buy food, it was very difficult for everyone. Now it’s better, but we have to be careful and follow the rules.
“I tried to stay busy. First, I was just training and practicing, but then I also wanted to learn new things, so I started painting and I like it now.
“Some of my family members bought me things to make cooking easier, it helps to learn and it was fun. I try to stay busy and do new things. I hope everyone is going well and all the families are safe. that this is a difficult time, but it will be better. “
