Another running promotion from 2015 will find a new home. A day after the Los Angeles Rams released Todd Gurley, allowing him to sign an agreement with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday morning, Melvin Gordon finalized an agreement that would also take him out of Los Angeles.
While teams like the Buccaneers and Bills would have been interested in his services, Gordon is more headed for his longtime division rival to Denver to join the Broncos, according to a CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora report. According to subsequent reportsGordon’s agreement is for two years and $ 16 million, of which $ 13.5 million is guaranteed.
Gordon spent the first five years of his career with the Chargers, totaling 4,420 yards and 36 touchdowns in his 1,059 runs. Last season, Gordon entered a protracted recession while trying to take advantage of his contract with Los Angeles. Instead, the Chargers simply shared the contacts between Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. The Chargers then gave Ekeler an extension of the offseason, locking him up as their favorite ball carrier.
This left Gordon to look for a free market deal, which he apparently found in Denver. It’s an interesting fit for him, given that the Broncos already had a one-two punch from Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman in the backfield. Lindsay seemed to be their favorite guy for much of last season, so with the arrival of Gordon, it’s likely that Freeman could get into the commercial market.
It is the latest in a series of Denver films, which also released quarterback Joe Flacco with a failed physical designation and replaced him with Jeff Driskel, left offensive lineman Connor McGovern to sign with the Jets and replaced him with Graham Glasgow, and saw longtime loyal cornerback Chris Harris Jr. leave for the Chargers.
