It might not be the medal they were hoping for at the start of the Olympics, but the United States Women’s National Team took home the bronze after a thrilling 4-3 game against Australia.
The USWNT entered the tournament as a big favorite as the world champion and on a 44-game winning streak.
But things unfolded very quickly with an opening loss to Sweden.
They rallied and reached the semi-final, but lost to Canada for the first time in 20 years and their bid for a gold medal evaporated.
The United States had to get up and go for the bronze medal and that is exactly what they did.
Veterans Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd both scored twice in the seven-goal thriller to see them win 4-3.
Rapinoe and Lloyd combined for four World Cups, three gold medals and now two bronze medals.
Their legendary status has never been in doubt, but if this is their last Olympics, they have left a lasting memory.
Rapinoe scored two sensational goals to put the United States ahead with the first straight from a corner – known colloquially as “Olimpico” – then the second with a superb volley.
Lloyd made it 3-1 before the break, then added the second six minutes after their return.
The Matildas responded shortly after to reduce the deficit to two before a 90th-minute goal created a nervous finish.
The United States held their ground for the bronze medal in what was an exciting game.
