ANN ARBOR – The Ann Arbor area high school basketball season has not disappointed, although it has been suspended for a few local women’s basketball teams.
Teams across the region included basketball players who stepped up when their teams needed it most, which led to many individual and team accomplishments.
Below you will find the MLive Girls basketball player of the year and the dream team from the Ann Arbor region for the 2019-2020 season.
While it is always a difficult task, the player of the year and the dream teams have been selected by MLive sports reporter Greg Wickliffe and are based on stats, awards and the contributions of area coaches.
ELLA STEMMER, SALINE
Ella Stemmer was the most consistent player in the Ann Arbor area during the season from start to finish and became one of the best guards in the state as a junior en route to the player’s award. ‘year.
The red winner of the Southeastern Conference averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, three interceptions and three assists, while shooting 49% from the field, 41% from the 3-point line and 84% from the free throw line. Stemmer overshadowed the career 1,000-point plateau and was the region’s biggest threat.
She also helped lead the Hornets to their most wins in a single season with 22 to go with a spot in the regional championship game.
Whenever the Hornets needed an impact game, the 5’11 ” goalkeeper was there to deliver. Stemmer recorded his best performance for the last time, scoring 30 points to help Saline eliminate Wayne Memorial in the regional semifinals.
“She has been at the top level all season,” said Saline coach Leigh Ann Roehm. “I don’t think there is a child who has had such consistent performances. She is at the heart of the race we have done this year. She has intervened in every big game and beat the best players from other teams. “
MYA PETTICORD, YPSILANTI ARBOR PREP
The second 5’9 ” star did not disappoint in her second season with the Gators. Petticord had an average of 20 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.2 interceptions on 56% of shots from the field to help Arbor Prep compete in the regional championship game for the seventh consecutive year.
CAPRICE AUGUSTINE, YPSILANTI
Augustine has gradually become one of the main low risk threats in the Ann Arbor area. The 6’2 inch junior striker was the only player in the region to double-double on average as she finished the season with an average of 13.5 points and 11.2 rebounds as well as 3, 1 blocks per match. She was also an entirely white selection of SEC.
RILEY DAVIS, CHELSEA
Davis, the Bulldogs’ 6-foot senior point guard, helped the team win a SEC-White title share and 17-4 record in their last season. The Wayne State signatory averaged 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 interceptions per outing to earn all SEC white honors.
SIENA SMITH, ANN ARBOR HURON
SEC primary guard and winner of the SEC Red averaged 14 points, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 43% on the field. She will play college basketball in Michigan-Dearborn with her twin sister, Jadyn.
STEFFI BENTLEY, SALINE
The 6’1 inch senior striker became a more prominent role and played for the Hornets all season. Bentley averaged 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks per game. She pulled 58 percent of the field and was a 100% SEC selection.
JADYN SMITH, ANN ARBOR HURON
The elder had an average of 10 points on 45% of shots from the field and had six rebounds and three assists per game. It was an entirely red SEC selection.
SYDNEY PNACEK, DEXTER
The sophomore led Dexter on average with 11.8 points per game and on average 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists. She was selected to the SEC white team.
LAUREN DEWOLF, ANN ARBOR PIONEER
DeWolf led Pioneer by scoring 12.1 points per exit to go with 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 steals to win the SEC’s white honors as a sophomore.
KAIDEN GLENN, YPSILANTI ARBOR PREP
Glenn averaged 12 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists, three steals and one block per game during his junior season for the Gators.
KRISTINA PEACH, WHITMORE LAKE
The first-year player was named freelance player of the year for the Michigan sports conference after averaging 19.5 points, 6.9 interceptions and 6.1 rebounds per game.

LEIGH ANN ROEHM, SALINE
Roehm led the Hornets to the most wins in a single season with 22 goals and guided them to their first district championship since 2013. Led the team to a 12-game winning streak in the game that included revenge for the team’s only two losses and obtaining a place in the Division 1 regional championship match.
