TOKYO — Mazda plans to end production of its vehicles at a joint venture plant in Vladivostok, eastern Russia, on Nikkei reports the newspaper.
The Japanese automaker sold 30,000 cars in Russia last year.
Mazda said in March that parts exports to the plant would end and production would cease when inventory ran out. It operates the plant with Russian automaker Sollers.
Mazda has not made a decision on whether to end car sales and service operations in Russia, the Nikkei said Saturday. There was no time limit to stop production at the Vladivostok plant.
Mazda and Sollers began production at the plant in 2012 after the Russian auto market recovered strongly from the 2009 financial crisis.
The plant built the CX 5, Mazda 6 and a Sollers-branded vehicle for the Russian market. Production capacity started at 50,000 units per year, with the goal of increasing annual production to 70,000.
Toyota announced on Friday that it will close its plant in St. Petersburg, Russia, due to shortages of key components and materials following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
