A late-night party ended with a mass shooting that left one dead and eight others injured in San Bernardino on Friday.
The shooting was reported in the 3600 block of East Highland Avenue at approximately 11:53 p.m., San Bernardino Police Department Sgt. said Thomas.
A large crowd had apparently been attending a party at one of the businesses in the Highland Square shopping center when gunfire rang out.
Officers who arrived discovered that a person outside the company had been pronounced dead at the scene, Thomas said.
Family members told KTLA that the victim was a 20-year-old man who attended the party at a parlor in the mall.
The police did not identify the victim.
A witness said shots were also fired across the street at a Mobil gas station.
“We just heard gunshots and a lot of children running,” said a witness who did not want to be identified. “Most of the children were under 18.”
Video showed crime scene tape blocking parking lots at both locations on Saturday morning.
Police later confirmed that eight other victims were shot in the incident, many of whom were self-transported to local hospitals.
All eight injured victims appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, Thomas said.
The injured were being treated at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Video following the incident showed a crowd at the scene being aggressive with law enforcement as they attempted to investigate the shooting.
Police did not say whether they were looking for a single shooter or multiple shooters.
No motive for the shooting has been disclosed.
