Maserati GranCabrio spied for the first time with a V6 engine

The all-new Maserati GranTurismo made its official debut earlier this month and we can already take a first look at its open-top version. What you see in the gallery below are the first spy photos of the next generation GranCabrio taken by our photographers in Italy. It’s a fully camouflaged prototype but, to be honest, the disguise doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

From this first look at the grand touring convertible, you can already tell that it is almost exactly identical to the new GranTurismo. The only difference at first glance, of course, is the soft top, which replaces the coupe’s hardtop layout. However, the test vehicle had smaller headlights, bumpers and other details that are no different from the production GranTurismo.

These spy photos come just in time to confirm a report from earlier this month that the GranCabrio is already in development. This prototype has exhaust pipes in the back, which means there’s a combustion engine under the hood. We know for a fact that the convertible will mirror the coupe’s engine range and that there’s a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre mill powering this prototype. Whether it has 489 horsepower (365 kilowatts) and 442 pound-feet (600 Newton-meters) of torque or 550 hp (410 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) we don’t know but that would depend on the level finish (Modena or Trofeo) on the standard version.

The 3.0 V6 models are expected to arrive first, but the most powerful variant in the lineup will be the GranCabrio Folgore. Again, it will share hardware with the hardtop version of the same car, meaning power will come from a twin-motor electric system generating 750 hp (560 kW) and 995 lb-ft (1,350 Nm). ) of instantaneous torque. These numbers will make the new GranCabrio the most powerful production convertible ever by Maserati. The GranTurismo Folgore should do the sprint from 0 to 62 miles per hour (0 to 100 kilometers per hour) in just 2.7 seconds, but the convertible will likely be a bit slower due to the extra weight.

Given the progress of work on the new GranCabrio, we have reason to believe that the final production versions will be launched around the second half of next year.
