Manchester United must sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and call on ex-Chelsea manager Antonio Conte to replace him after another dismal defeat for the Red Devils boss.
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor said United “had to bite the bullet” after losing to their former club at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer’s week has been pretty gruesome, having lost to West Ham in the Carabao Cup third round and then to Villa in the Premier League, both at Old Trafford.
It was actually the Villains’ first victory at the Theater of Dreams since 2009 and the result put even more pressure on the Norwegian.
The back-to-back home defeats follow a poor start to the new Champions League campaign, with United suffering a road loss from young Swiss Young Boys – in a match that put Solskjaer’s management of the game and tactical acumen on under the projectors.
And, although the former striker is a club legend, Agbonlahor says it is time for United to be ruthless and out of the hot seat for the sake of the team and the club’s title ambitions – just like Chelsea l ‘did by replacing club legend Frank Lampard and with Thomas Tuchel.
Instead, Agbonlahor says Solskjaer should be given a role in the club’s boardroom.
The ex-Villa star told talkSPORT: “If I was Manchester United now… Chelsea did it with Lampard….
“They got rid of Lampard, which was difficult because he’s a club legend, but they got rid of him, they brought in Tuchel and look what happened.
“Manchester United now have to take Ole out, give him a job on the board somewhere, bring in Conte, he will improve with these players.
“Same sound [Solskjaer] decision made during the match, Maguire was limping for ten minutes before taking him out, great managers will remove players if they notice they are not moving properly.
“You need a goal in the last ten minutes of the game and you [Edinson] Cavani who hasn’t played much football this season.
“You have [Jesse] Lingard over there who just faced West Ham and put him in the top corner, you have Sancho that you bought for £ 70million. I just think some of his decisions, Solskjaer, were miles away.
“For me, Manchester United have to bite the bullet now. Bring in Conte who is over there, Zinedine Zidane is over there, bring in a manager who will make the most of these players. “
Echoing Agbonlahor’s comments, a Manchester United fan called for talkSPORT after the loss to Villa to further assert the need for the club to bring in either Conte or Zidane.
“I think Gabby is probably right,” the Red Devils fan Andrew said.
“Another disappointing performance today, Ronaldo and Bruno weren’t really visible, our main guy today was Greenwood. It could have been two or three for Villa.
“Solskjaer probably pushed Man United as far as he could. We are not going to compete, we are already out of the League Cup, we are not going to win the Champions League and we are the fourth best team of the Premier League.
“Gabby is right, we should probably be looking at someone like Conte or Zidane who is on a different level and who is available.”
