Manchester United are hoping manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s contract extension has given them pole position in the race for Erling Haaland’s signing.
The Borussia Dortmund forward is arguably the most wanted player on the planet after a breathtaking start to his career.
Chelsea appear to want the Norwegian ace this summer but will be forced to fork out £ 150million for his services.
The Blues are trying to beat their rivals for his signing and sign him now rather than wait another year, despite it only costing £ 68million due to the release clause in his contract.
There does not appear to be any progress in their attempts to land the 21-year-old and now Man United believe they can steal a march on their rivals.
Haaland was led by Solskjaer at the start of his career when the duo were in Molde in their homeland.
The Red Devils legend made his Haaland debut in April 2017 and earlier this year it was reported that they remain in regular contact.
And the Sun report that a new three-year deal at Solskjaer has increased their chances of signing the forward.
Haaland scored 41 goals in 41 games in his first full season with Dortmund, highlighting why he is so in demand.
For now, however, Old Trafford loyalists will have to settle for signings from Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
The duo arrive for a combined £ 116million and are expected to help the club lead a Premier League title charge.
But they will have to dethrone a Man City team that could add Jack Grealish and Harry Kane to their ranks.
