Harry Maguire could miss the Europa League final and potentially faces a race against time to be fit for Euro 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested.
The defender injured his ankle in Manchester United’s victory at Aston Villa on Sunday. Maguire slowed down in the 78th minute of the game after colliding with Anwar El Ghazi.
There is no official diagnosis, but the first signs do not look good, with Solskjaer saying he expects Maguire to be away for a few weeks or even a month.
“With a bit of luck [the Europa League final] will be fine with Harry but I don’t know, ”Solskjaer said.
“We have to check it out. It may take a few weeks or a month – we don’t know.
“It was his calf or his leg. I think the player landed on him and he twisted something.
It would be a blow to Man United, who have one last Europa League date with Villarreal on May 26.
Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate will also be worried about England’s first match at Euro 2020 on June 13.
“Harry was excellent and it’s almost unknown the minutes he played,” Solskjaer added. “His physical form is very good and he is robust. But today it looked like the boy had landed on top of him and twisted his ankle.
“I don’t know how bad it is. He might be available on Tuesday, maybe not.
Maguire’s shot aside, it was a successful outing for the Red Devils, who came from behind to claim a 3-1 win at Villa Park.
Bertrand Traoré’s astonishing goal put the home side in the lead, but a penalty from Bruno Fernandes evened the scores. Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani got on the scoresheet to seal the victory and make Manchester City wait a little longer for their Premier League crown.
Man United are in the midst of a very busy series of matches, having made their way to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday. They will then face Leicester on Tuesday, then Liverpool on Thursday.
“The boys who played Thursday and today won’t play 90 minutes for sure,” Solskjaer added ahead of the Foxes clash.
“Sports scientists will do their job. They’re going to sit down on Tuesday and see who’s ready. “
