Odion Ighalo scored twice for Manchester United as his team beat Derby 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
Wayne Rooney did not return to haunt his former team at Pride Park on Thursday when the Red Devils overtook the championship club.
Derby started off brilliantly against United while Louie Sibley pulled very far very early.
The visitors struggled to find their early rhythm and Rooney forced a good save from Sergio Romero.
The goalkeeper turned Rooney’s free kick 25 yards after 18 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Luke Shaw put United in the lead after 33 minutes with only his second career goal.
The defender’s volley bounced off the grass and over Kelle Roos for the first game after Derby failed to clear their lines.
Shaw may have to fight teammate Jesse Lingard for the goal, however, as reruns suggest that he may have run over the midfielder as he looped over the goalkeeper.
Seven minutes later, Ighalo scored his second United goal in his second start to double his lead.
The striker finished low in the corner when he recovered Shaw’s pass and pushed Craig Forsyth away as the visitors took a 2-0 lead in the break.
As in the first half, Derby started the second well and Romero gathered the deviated effort from Max Bird.
Martyn Waghorn also glanced at a five inch wide Jayden Bogle cross five minutes after the break.
Shaw then came close with a chance for a second goal but his right foot effort didn’t have the power to beat Roos.
Ighalo closed the tie with his second of the evening in the 70th minute. The striker broke the ball at home on the second attempt after his first effort was blocked by Bogle.
Rooney was again denied a dream goal against his former team in overtime while Romero was forced to tip his free kick 25 yards over the bar.
Man United will face Norwich in the quarterfinals of the competition.
