Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been backed to potentially leave the club once they get their hands on the Champions League.
The Lowdown: Guardiola’s new contract
Earlier this week it was announced that Guardiola had signed a new two-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, keeping him at the club until 2025.
During his time at the Manchester club, the 51-year-old won four Premier League titles and numerous other domestic trophies.
Despite this recent contract announcement, the subject of Guardiola’s potential exit from the club has arisen, with one pundit suggesting when the Spaniard could call him up to City one day.
The latest: Guardiola backed to leave City
Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Noel Whelan was asked if Guardiola is waiting to get his hands on a Champions League title before ending his time with City.
He said, “It’s possible. Signing a short-term contract like that, it would be interesting to see what he would do if he won the Champions League in the next two seasons – he could choose to walk away.
“It’s the only trophy he has left to win. He is still building a very good young team at Man City. He is brought [Erling] Haland, [Kalvin] Phillips, [Julian] Alvarez.
“He knows they’re not quite there yet, but they have a very good chance this season. It’s a trophy that would really set him apart from all the other managers who have been at Man City.”
The verdict: City fans should be buzzing
The fact that Guardiola has decided to sign a new contract at City, which is expected to take him up to nine years in charge, will undeniably be great news for supporters given his success with the club.
As for winning the Champions League, if winning it means he’s likely to leave afterwards, some City fans might want to delay his win if that’s the case.
Do you think City will win the Champions League under Pep Guardiola?
Yes
Nope
So far this season, the Citizens have come through the group stage unbeaten and are now looking to face RB Leipzig in the round of 16, with players and staff hoping to get their hands on it.
All in all, City fans should celebrate the fact that they still have Guardiola as their manager and savor every minute they have with him at the helm whether they win the Champions League or not.
