Android notifications have their pros and cons and lately they are getting boring as every app wants your attention and it can be overwhelming. Constant interruptions can not only hamper your productivity, but also affect you mentally.
Enabling do not disturb mode is an extreme decision, but with Android Oreo and later, the notification categories were divine in keeping those Android notifications under control in a manageable way.
How do notification categories work?
Notification categories work by letting you select the type of notifications you want to receive from each app. This allows you to turn off the rest of the app notifications. For example, for Instagram, you can configure to receive notifications of your mentions, but disable DM notifications.
Here’s how to do it:
Go to Settings> Applications and notifications> Notifications
App notifications> click on each app to activate the notification you want to receive.
Turn off notifications as they come in
Another way is to change the notification as soon as you get it on your home screen by tapping on it or swiping the notification slightly to the left from the notification panel and tapping the gear icon.
You can dive into notification categories and continue to personalize them, for example by changing their behavior on the home screen and making them less annoying. When you’re in the apps notification categories (steps above), click each to change their sound or appearance so you won’t be interrupted when a notification arrives.
If you want to receive sound notifications, you can change the default sound to a specific tone from any audio file stored on your phone, which will let you know what type of notification you are receiving instead of checking in. every time your phone.
Take advantage of the Snooze button
When a notification appears on the notification panel, a slight swipe to the left reveals a gear icon and a clock icon. The clock icon lets you snooze the notification and serves as a reminder so you can come back to it when you have time.
If you have a phone running Android Pie, go to Settings and scroll down to the Digital Wellbeing section. From there, you can see how many notifications you get and how many are sent by a single app to select the most disturbing app.
