Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side are back in action just three days after beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
The win ended United’s run of just one point from two league games against Crystal Palace and Arsenal last week, ending the Red Devils’ nine-game winning streak.
The latest loss to Arsenal last weekend leaves United in fourth place, 11 points behind the league leaders having also played one game more.
The top four looks like a more realistic goal for the ten Hag side now, where they have a three-point cushion ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham with a game less.
The Red Devils could still claim domestic silverware this season, with a foot in the Carabao Cup final and a potential FA Cup run following their 3-1 win over Everton in the previous round.
Reading are their fourth-round opponents, who are managed by Paul Ince, who won two FA Cup titles as a Manchester United player in six years at the club.
The Berkshire side have won just one of their last six league games, which has seen the best performers from the start of the season fall to 14th in the table as things stand.
The Royals, however, managed to beat Championship top-flighters Watford in the previous round of the FA Cup, and will take up the challenge at Old Trafford.
The two sides last met just three years ago in an FA Cup third round tie, with Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku scoring in a 2-0 home win for United.
Reading have only beaten the Red Devils once in their history, an FA Cup game in 1927, 17 meetings ago.
