Manchester United may have celebrated Borussia Dortmund reaching the Champions League final after cashing in on a higher loan fee.

They let Sancho leave Old Trafford for Dortmund on loan in January, and part of the deal meant that if the German club reached the Champions League final they would pay the parent club more in loan fees.

And that’s exactly what happened after Dortmund beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on aggregate in their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

Dortmund had already shelled out £3million to sign Sancho in January, who was ostracized by Erik ten Hag after a fallout.

They also agreed to pay the majority of the winger’s salary, which would increase to almost his entire salary depending on performance.

That deal also saw the Signal Iduna Park side pay United an extra £3.4 million based on progress and Champions League appearances. talkSPORT understands that most of the additions have now been made following Sancho’s arrival at Wembley.

But even though Dortmund may have to pay more for Sancho, he won’t mind at all after shocking the football world to reach the Champions League final.

After bringing together PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle earlier this season in the ‘Group of Death’, they finished top of that group and have since eliminated PSV, Atletico Madrid and now the French champions .

Mats Hummels scored the only goal of the second leg after Niclas Fullkrug scored last week while Sancho was praised for his formidable dribbling skills.

It is a remarkable turnaround for Sancho, who was banned from training with United’s under-18s after a row with Ten Hag at the start of the season.

He has not played for the Red Devils since August 26 after refusing to apologize to the Dutch manager, who left him out of the squad following their defeat to Arsenal earlier this month for his performances at training.

Sancho insisted he was being used as a scapegoat and refused to apologize for his comments, leading to the two men finding themselves at loggerheads.

The 24-year-old signed for United in 2021 from Dortmund for £73m, being touted as a potential poster boy to lead the club into a new era.

However, the striker failed to find his feet at Old Trafford and in 82 appearances in all competitions he has scored just 12, nine of which came in the Premier League.

Whether his future lies at United remains to be seen with the current campaign still underway, although talkSPORT understands the situation could be beyond repair.

Dortmund would love to sign him permanently but may not have the funds to complete a full transfer, while they also want to buy another on loan in Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, who has an option to buy clause of £35 million.

A lot could depend on whether Ten Hag stays at Old Trafford next season with his own future under consideration with Sir Jim Ratcliffe taking control of football operations.

A crushing 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday night – just 24 hours before Sancho reached the Champions League final – would have done little to bolster his case.

However, talkSPORT understands no decision will be made on Ten Hag’s future until the FA Cup final later this month, but a former Premier League manager is set to take over.
