Magda Szubanski reveals she had no idea Heath Ledger was planning to kiss her

Magda Szubanski has revealed she was as shocked as we were when Heath Ledger planted a kiss on her lips in this now infamous viral video from 2006.

At the AFI Awards that year, the comedian, who played Sharon Strzelecki from the hit ABC comedy Kath & Kim, approached Heath in the middle of the interview, before spontaneously planting a long kiss on his lips.

On Sunday, the 61-year-old responded to someone on Twitter who asked about the video: “Was that a @MagdaSzubanski setup? At least a joke between friends?

‘Nup! Heath had no idea! but he was such a brilliant actor that he improvised spectacularly!!’ she replied in a Tweet.

The interaction between Heath inspired him to present a Kath & Kim storyline which, sadly, never came to fruition.

The actress told TV Week that Heath nearly played a stalker chasing her iconic Sharon Strzelecki character on the ABC comedy series.

The guest role was first hinted at in 2006, just two years before the Oscar-winning actor died aged 28.

The day after they kissed on the red carpet, the Two Hands star phoned Magda to propose to her.

“He had so much fun that he wanted to discuss a storyline for Kath & Kim, where he would become Sharon’s stalker,” the three-time Logie winner said.

Just two years later, in 2008, the Perth-born star tragically died of a drug overdose.

“It would have been so nice if he had been on the show,” Szubanski lamented.
