The latest beta of macOS 11.3 confirmed upcoming support for AMD’s RX 6800/6900 XT, the company’s latest high-end graphics cards that debuted last year in October (via MacityNet).
The Radeon RX 6800 and 6900 XT graphics cards are AMD’s answer to equivalent Nvidia video cards, such as the RTX 3080, and should be usable through Thunderbolt external enclosures (eGPUs) with Intel Macs. Currently, Macs with Apple’s M1 processors do not support eGPUs.
“Support for eGPUs is one of the strengths of Intel Macs over newer Mac ARMs. An eGPU allows you to increase graphics performance when used with professional applications, 3D games, VR content creation, etc. EGPUs are supported by all Macs equipped with an Intel processor and Thunderbolt 3 ports. ”
In addition to supporting the latest graphics cards from AMD, Big Sur’s latest beta also supports PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers, new customizations in Safari, and more.
