New England Patriots star quarterback Mac Jones suffered a left leg injury with just under two minutes left in their 37-26 Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and he might run out of time. According to NFL media, tests revealed that the second-year caller suffered from what is described as a fairly severe sprained ankle. The Patriots are hopeful Jones won’t need surgery and his recovery timeline is yet to be determined.

According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, there will be further tests today to determine the extent of his sprained ankle.

The Patriots are scheduled to face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field next Sunday. If Jones can’t go — which seems likely at this point — veteran Brian Hoyer should take over at quarterback. The 36-year-old’s last start came in Week 4 of 2020, when he completed 15 of 24 passes for 130 yards and an interception in a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones’ injury occurred when Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell hit Jones high and fell on the back of his left leg. Jones’ reaction was chilling, as he immediately knew something was wrong. Right after the kick, Jones got up on his right leg and jumped to the sideline. According to Boston Sports Journal, Jones screamed in pain as he was carried down the stairs to the locker room.

Initial X-rays were negative, according to reports, but the Patriots then feared Jones suffered tendon and/or ligament damage in his ankle.

Jones struggled Sunday afternoon completing 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards and three interceptions. He also rushed five times for 31 yards and a touchdown. After the game, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick did not provide an update on his quarterback.
