The Lord of the Rings franchise has had some amazing games over the years, but the new release The Lord of the Rings: Gollum absolutely not part of it.
After many delays, Gollum finally released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X/S yesterday, and the review ratings were catastrophically low. At the time of writing, the PS5 version of the game has a critical score of 40 on Metacritic, which also makes it the lowest-rated game of the year so far. Yeah.
Needless to say, the whole situation has made fans even more grateful for the golden age of LOTR games, and everyone on Reddit is feeling very nostalgic for the Battle for Middle-earth series. Both real-time strategy games (released in 2004 and 2006, respectively) are fan favorites for a reason, but unfortunately the official game servers were shut down at the end of 2010, and obviously, given their age, they ‘re also now very dated. For all these reasons, gamers are now demanding remakes of the original game and its sequel.
“If they want to make a lot of money using The Lord of the Rings franchise, they just have to remaster this game! Instead, we get games like Gollum“, posted Reddit user Zjoee, along with an image of Battle for Middle-earth IIbox art.
“Dude, for real! I loved that game. The first one was really good too,” ThraxedOut replied. “True! Something about this generation of LOTR games really put you in Middle-earth,” OnlyPenguin wrote. “My childhood right there. That’s what made me fall in love with the strategy game genre” , Circumflexboy added.
Whatever the next Lord of the Rings games are, they will almost certainly be better than Gollum, anyway. That still doesn’t mean they’ll be any good, though.
