Charles Howell III won his first LIV golf title in the season-opening event with a stunning eight-under 63 in the final round in Mexico.
The American took home $4m (£3.33m) plus a quarter of the $1m prize for winning the tag team event with Crushers GC.
Howell, 43, finished 16 under, four strokes ahead of runner-up Peter Uihlein with Sunday’s bogey-free final round.
“I had a lot of experience here,” said Howell, who played the Mayakoba course for the 14th time last week.
“I think having played in the wind for so many years helped a bit.”
Following last year’s inaugural series, LIV Golf’s second season features 14 events with a combined value of $405m (£335m).
Howell, who won an estimated $42m (£35m) in 609 events on the PGA Tour after turning professional in 2000, took the lead with six birdies from the front nine.
Uihlein, who was co-leader after the second of three rounds, couldn’t catch Howell despite a late rally, with four birdies on the final six holes.
“He won it up front,” Uihlein said. “He did a hell of a job. There was no pressure on him and he did exactly what he had to do. He’s a worthy champion.”
Talor Gooch, the other second-round co-leader, struggled on Sunday and dropped to 14th.
Branden Grace of South Africa was third at 10 under, six strokes behind Howell, while England’s Paul Casey was fourth at seven under.
Casey plays with Howell on the Crushers GC team, which also includes former US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and Indian Anirban Lahiri. They won the team event under 26, nine strokes ahead of last year’s winning team, 4Aces GC, which includes Uihlein, Pat Perez and grand champions Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson.
The second LIV Golf event of the 2023 season will take place March 17-20 at Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Arizona.
