Palmeiras beat Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores final to secure direct entry to next year’s Club World Cup. With the inclusion of the South American champions, the package is now complete for the prestigious tournament.
The competition is expected to take place in early 2022 in Dubai. The six continental cup winners from each confederation qualify as well as the national champions of the host country (Al Hilal).
The seven finalized contenders are – Chelsea (UEFA Champions League), Palmeiras (Copa Libertadores), Al Hilal (Hosts), Al Ahly (CAF Champions League), Monterrey (CONCACAF Champions League), Auckland City (OFC Champions League), Al Jazira Club (AFC Champions League).
The draw will take place on Monday evening, where Chelsea Club legend John Terry will host the event.
European champion Chelsea would go straight to the semi-final, and South American champion Palmeiras would also enjoy the same luxury. The two teams cannot therefore compete in the semi-finals. Anyone among the other six contenders will be a possible contender for Chelsea in the final four.
Chelsea, historically, have never won this particular FIFA competition. The best we could manage was a second place in 2012 after losing to Brazilian giants, Corinthians.
