Paris St-Germain are in talks with Lionel Messi’s representatives for the Argentina striker to join the Ligue 1 club after leaving Barcelona.
BBC Sport has learned that Camp Messi contacted PSG on Thursday once it became clear that Barcelona were unable to honor the contract they had agreed to.
Further talks take place on Saturday amid growing confidence that a deal can be reached.
Barca have said Messi will give a press conference on Sunday at 11:00 BST.
The Catalan club said on Thursday that Messi, a free agent, would not stay at the club.
They blamed “financial and structural hurdles” for the player’s departure after 21 years.
Friday, Barça president Joan Laporta noted keeping Messi could have put the club in danger for 50 years.
Messi, 34, has been a free agent since July 1, when his contract expired. He had agreed to a new five-year contract with reduced wages – but the club still had to cut payrolls to pay him off, and couldn’t do it.
The Argentine captain is Barcelona’s top scorer with 672 goals and has won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Copa del Rey, as well as the Ballon d’Or six times.
Barca boss Ronald Koeman said on Saturday he wished Messi the best.
Writing on Twitter, Koeman said: “It’s still hard to understand that you won’t be playing for FC Barcelona anymore.
“Thank you for everything you have done for our Leo club. I really enjoyed the full season we worked together.
“I am impressed with your work ethic and your desire to win. It makes you the best player in the world. For now, I wish you and your family the best!”
Messi is believed to be comfortable with the idea of joining PSG given that he already knows a number of their players.
Neymar played for Barcelona from 2013 to 2017 before his world record of £ 200million was transferred to PSG, and Messi remains close to the Brazilian.
Messi was pictured with Neymar, as well as Argentina team-mates Angel di Maria and Leandro Paredes and fellow PSG star Marco Verrati on vacation earlier this month.
The deal would be possible as part of financial fair play as PSG recruiting this summer has largely focused on out-of-contract players in the form of defender Sergio Ramos, midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, while right-back Achraf Hakimi has joined Inter Milan. .
